Biography
With the release of their 2008 debut, Dear Hamlyn, Melbourne’s Luluc has become a quiet sensation. The music of Zoë Randell and Steve Hassett has quickly become renowned for its austere and unadorned beauty. In songs pared down to an essential core, Zoë’s unique alto is central and exquisite melodies are sung with uncommon grace and solemn power.
Luluc recorded Dear Hamlyn in the attic of a faded Melbourne mansion. Zoë and Steve arranged the album at their own pace, favouring antique guitars and close harmonies to underscore a body of work remarkable in its restraint and emotional purity. Since the album's release less than a year ago, Luluc have found friends and fans among a select musical coterie, touring with Lucinda Williams, José González, Charlie Parr, Joan As Policewoman, Eric Bibb and Fleet Foxes.
Like a whisper or a caress, Luluc hold their audiences entranced. Zoë’s silken voice provides a strikingly beautiful counterpoint to her nylon-string guitar; Steve’s subtle vocal and guitar accompaniment weave in to complete a rich and deeply affecting sound.
